Custom Carriage Bolt

Custom carriage bolts are threaded fasteners manufactured to specified dimensions, materials, thread configurations, and surface finishes. A typical design features a smooth domed head and a square neck directly beneath it. When the square neck engages a matching hole, it helps resist bolt rotation during tightening.

Domed Head Design

Carbon steel and stainless steel are common material choices. Surface finishes may include zinc plating, hot-dip galvanizing, black oxide, and zinc-aluminum coating systems, depending on the material, corrosion environment, and project requirements.

Dimensions and Neck Fit

Confirm the nominal diameter, head diameter, head height, square neck width, neck height, and overall length. The neck must fit the mating hole without excessive clearance or interference.

Material and Mechanical Requirements

Specify the required material and mechanical property class according to joint loads, component materials, installation conditions, and the governing standard. Do not select a property class solely from the assumption that a higher number is suitable for every structural application.

Thread and Grip Length

Choose metric or inch threads according to the mating nut or threaded component. Define the required thread length and grip length based on the combined thickness of the connected parts and the intended thread engagement.

Corrosion Protection

Consider humidity, outdoor exposure, chemicals, and contact between dissimilar metals. Specify the coating system and any required corrosion test method and acceptance criteria. Salt-spray hours should be stated only when supported by an agreed test specification and relevant test results.
